Indian Railways becoming ‘goods’, revenue up over 20 per cent; Now the hopes of the general public towards concessions

New Delhi : During the corona epidemic Indian Railwayshad stopped fare concessions for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and journalists. But even after six years they have not started again. In these six years, the Railways has increased its revenue from passenger fares by more than 20 percent and reduced its dependence on freight.

A Janata Dal (United) MP in the Lok Sabha demanded the government to resume fare concessions for senior citizens, journalists, disabled persons, women above 50 years and men above 55 years. Participating in the discussion on the demand for grant under the control of the Ministry of Railways for the year 2026-27, Kaushalendra Kumar of JD (U) said that after the Corona epidemic, the number of 3-tier and sleeper coaches in trains has been halved.

Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (Thackeray group) mentioned the congestion of passengers in Mumbai’s local trains and said that the problem will not be solved until six lines are constructed under the Mumbai suburban railway network. He requested the Railway Minister to consider running elevated trains to solve the problem. Sawant also demanded merger of Konkan Railway with Central Railway.

Raising the issue of renaming of railway stations, he said that before the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, it was widely publicized that the Ministry of Railways had renamed several stations in Mumbai. Sawant claimed that the name of the Curry Road station has not yet been changed to ‘Lalbagh Ka Raja’. Many other stations mentioned in the announcement have also not been renamed. Amar Sharadrao Kale of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) mentioned that many railway stations in Maharashtra have been closed during the Kovid-19 epidemic. He demanded that it be restarted.

Opposition parties also supported the decision

Trinamool Congress MP Jun Malia also demanded the resumption of this train fare concession. Congress MP Benny Behanan said that many railway stations were closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and have not yet reopened. They demanded the resumption of these stops. Claiming the delay in the implementation of railway projects in Kerala, the Congress MP said that the people of the state are expecting equal treatment.
