Chess Olympiad 2024: The Indian chess team celebrated its historic double gold medal at the Chess Olympiad 2024 in Rohit Sharma's style. Let us tell you that on September 22 in Budapest, both the men's and women's teams made headlines by winning gold medals in their respective categories.
India's young chess players proudly waved the national flag on the podium. Tania Sachdev and D Gukesh's celebration was reminiscent of Rohit Sharma's celebration after India's T20 World Cup 2024 win.
India's performance in Chess Olympiad
D Gukesh created history, winning his second individual gold medal and leading the men's team to their first gold medal at the Olympiad. He remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, registering 9 wins and a draw in 10 matches.
Additionally, Arjun Erigaisi performed brilliantly on Board 3, he was declared the best performer by winning 10 out of 11 games, contributing significantly to India getting 21 out of a possible 22 points.
Following the men's victory, the women's team comprising Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev and Abhijeet Kunte also won the gold medal, an unprecedented double gold medal for India at the Chess Olympiad.
The Indian men have previously won two bronze medals at the tournament in 2014 and 2022, while the women won a bronze medal at the 2022 edition held in Chennai.
The Indian team scored 21 out of a possible 22 points, winning 10 matches and drawing the only match 2-2 against defending Olympiad champions Uzbekistan.
Such was the story of dominance that in a total of 44 games, the Indian team lost just once when Praggnanandhaa was defeated by Wesley So of the USA in the penultimate round.
