Indian is a very good actor, US gave a big statement on buying oil from Russia, said – India did what we did&8230;

Scott Bessant on Russian Oil: The war in the Middle East is increasing uncertainty over global energy supplies. Meanwhile, India is buying oil from Russia which is already loaded in ships. Issuing a statement regarding this, the Trump administration said that this step has been taken with the aim of reducing global supply pressure.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, speaking to Fox Business, said, “Treasury has allowed India to buy Russian oil that is already in the waterways. The Indians have been very good actors in this matter. We told them not to buy the embargoed Russian oil this fall and they did.” The Trump administration says that this permission has been given to meet the temporary shortfall in global supply and ‘unsanction’ on more Russian oil is possible in the future.

Temporary exemption to Indian refineries

The US has given temporary exemption of 30 days to Indian refineries so that they can offload Russian oil consignments already stranded at sea. The administration claims that this will not bring any major economic benefit to Russia, as it only applies to pre-loaded oil.

According to the license of the Treasury Department, this exemption will be effective from March 5, 2026 to April 4, 2026. Only oil that has been loaded on a ship before March 5 can be purchased and this will apply only to consignments being unloaded at Indian ports. There will be no changes to Russia, Iran or other sanctions.

Instructions to bring supplies to the market quickly

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told the media that America is allowing its friend India to buy Russian oil floating near South Asia, refine it and send it back to the global market as soon as possible. He said long-term supply is sufficient, but tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected short-term supply. Refining these barrels by India will immediately reduce global pressure.

India-US energy cooperation

After imposing 25% punitive duty on India for several months, Donald Trump recently removed it. This came after an interim trade agreement in which India agreed to limit energy purchases from Russia and increase US energy purchases. However, the administration says that this relief is temporary and emergency. No permanent change is being made in US policy on Russia. This step has been taken only to control oil prices.
