Shahid Kapoor is among the top actors in Bollywood. Over the years, he has delivered several hits, but some of his films have not resonated with audiences. One such film was a disaster at the box office, yet it somehow managed to impress viewers on the OTT platform. The movie, inspired by the life of former domestic cricketer Arjun Talwar, is none other than the sports drama Jersey.

Why did Jersey Fail on Big Screens?

Produced on a budget of ₹80 crores, Jersey miserably underperformed, earning only ₹27.12 crore. Several reports indicated that Shahid worked hard for his role, but the results were disappointing. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film also features Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur in key roles. Jersey is a remake of the 2019 Telugu film of the same name, which starred Nani. Following the success of Nani’s Jersey, South filmmakers decided to produce a Hindi version, casting Shahid Kapoor as the lead.

Despite the anticipation, the movie struggled at the box office due to various factors. Although completed in 2020, its release was delayed multiple times because of COVID-19 and clashes with other major films. In fact, the release was postponed five times!

Jersey on OTT

Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey is available on Netflix and Disney Plus Hotstar. Though the movie did not do well at the box office, it received rave reviews on OTT platforms. Critics called the movie emotionally moving and heart-touching. Fans also praised Shahid and Mrunal’s chemistry on OTT platforms.

Plot of Jersey

The plot of Jersey revolves around a failed cricketer who decides to return to the sport in his late thirties to represent India and fulfil his son’s wish for a jersey as a gift.
