This prestigious award was given to her for her remarkable contribution in promoting gender equality in the field of peacekeeping.
United Nations Secretary General gave special appreciation
Announcing the award, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres openly praised Major Swati’s initiative Equal Partners, Lasting Peace. This initiative was launched with the aim of increasing gender inclusivity and empowering women’s participation within the UNMISS mission. This award is given to projects that promote women’s empowerment and equality-based peacebuilding.
Success in tough competition at global level
Major Swati’s project was selected from dozens of nominations received from UN missions and agencies around the world. It was declared the winner in the Gender Category. In the voting among the four finalists, in which UN personnel from around the world took part, their project received the most support. This is international recognition of his thinking, leadership and effective functioning.
Active and influential role in the mission
Major Swati led the Indian Engagement Team and effectively integrated it into UNMISS. Under his leadership the team carried out many important operations, including:
- Short and long range patrolling
- Joint River Patrol
Air patrolling in remote and sensitive areas
The objective of these operations was not only to ensure security but also to create an environment of trust and cooperation in the local communities.
Peace process strengthened by women’s participation
According to the United Nations, these efforts have allowed more than 5,000 women in conflict-affected areas of South Sudan to become actively engaged in community activities and peace processes. This increased confidence at the local level and strengthened peacekeeping. The UN said that the commitment of Major Swati and her team is an inspiring example for future peacekeeping missions.
Inspiring Model of Sustainable Peace
The UN explained that this achievement shows how gender-inclusive leadership can bring lasting peace and stability in sensitive and conflict-torn areas. This success of Major Swati Santa Kumar is a matter of pride not only for the Indian Army but for the entire country.
