Indian Railways is all set to revolutionize the transportation industry in India with the debut of the country’s first Shinkansen bullet train. The train will link Mumbai and Ahmedabad, covering a distance of 508 kilometers. The project is designed to meet the advanced standards of Europe and Japan, providing an unmatched high-speed travel experience in India.

Indian Railways is exploring the possibility of launching an Indian bullet train. While the final decision on procuring trains with Shinkansen technology from Japan is still pending, this high-speed train is expected to achieve speeds of up to 280 km/h along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, drastically reducing travel time from 6-7 hours to just 2 hours. Reports suggest the project could be completed by 2026.

Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Made in India’ initiative, the trains are set to operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. A senior railway official informed ETNow, “We have planned to develop and roll out the ‘Make-in-India’ Shinkansen train on the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. The train will have the technology to support European, Indian, and Japanese standards.”

The estimated cost of each bullet train is Rs 27.86 crore, with the total contract valued at Rs 866.87 crore. This amount covers design, development, testing, and infrastructure expenses, which will also support future high-speed rail projects in India. The first two locally developed bullet trains will be tested at speeds of 280 km/h.

The MAHSR corridor is being designed to accommodate a maximum train operating speed of 320 km/h, with plans to make the 50-km-long priority stretch operational by 2026.

These ‘Made in India’ bullet trains will feature modern facilities, including fully air-conditioned Chair Cars. The trains will offer contemporary comforts such as reclining and swivelling seats, designated spaces for passengers with special needs, and onboard entertainment systems.
