The country’s first National AI Research Institute will open in GIFT City, a big initiative of Gujarat Government.

IAIRO GIFT City: Gujarat Government Artificial Intelligence (AI) is preparing to give a new direction to the country in the field of. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced that from January 1, the Indian AI Research Organization (AI Research Organization) will be set up in GIFT City.IAIRO) will be formally launched. This will be India’s first national level AI research institute, which is being established under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This initiative is being considered a milestone for AI research, innovation and policy making in India.

IAIRO will be established on PPP model

IAIRO will be developed with joint collaboration of Gujarat Government, Central Government and private sector. The Chief Minister has given in-principle approval to this ambitious project. According to officials, the institute will operate as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in GIFT City and will be registered as a non-profit organization under Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013. Government policy support and private sector technical expertise will be brought together through the PPP model.

Investment of Rs 300 crore, equal participation of all three

An investment of approximately Rs 300 crore is proposed for IAIRO in the first five years. In this amount, the state government, central government and private partners will have equal share of 33.33 percent. Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) has been selected as the anchor private partner. IPA has committed to contribute Rs 25 crore in the year 2025-26, which includes leading Indian companies like Cipla, Torrent Pharma and Sun Pharma.

Expansion of AI in health, education and agriculture

The state government has also constituted a special AI task force to accelerate AI-based development. Its objective is to improve the quality of life of people through the use of AI in healthcare, education, agriculture and other public services. IAIRO will be developed as a multidisciplinary AI hub, where work on advanced research, cutting-edge AI products and innovative solutions will take place. Along with this, collaboration with startups and academic institutions will also be promoted.

Emphasis on hybrid compute model and policy research

Special priority will be given to intellectual property, skill development and policy based research in IAIRO. The institute will work on a hybrid compute model, in which on-premises GPU infrastructure will be connected to national platforms like IndiaAI Cloud. The government believes that this will give India a strong identity on the global AI research map and GIFT City will emerge as a major AI innovation centre.
