India’s MoS Kirti Vardhan to attend Myanmar presidential inauguration
India’s Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singhis set to undertake an official visit to Myanmar from April 8 to 11 at the invitation of the Government of Myanmar (GoM), according to information released through official government sources.
The visit is scheduled to coincide with the inauguration ceremony of the new President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, which will take place on April 10 in Nay Pyi Taw. Singh will represent India at the high-level event, underscoring New Delhi’s continued diplomatic engagement with its eastern neighbour.
During the visit, Singh is expected to hold meetings with senior officials and dignitaries of the Myanmar government in Nay Pyi Taw. These discussions are likely to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including trade, connectivity, and developmental assistance.
India and Myanmar share a long-standing relationship rooted in historical, cultural, and economic ties. As neighbouring countries, both sides have been working to enhance cross-border connectivity and economic integration, particularly in India’s Act East policy framework. Projects related to infrastructure development, capacity building, and humanitarian assistance have remained central to bilateral engagement.
Officials indicated that Singh’s engagements will also include participation in discussions on ongoing and future initiatives aimed at boosting economic collaboration. These may cover areas such as border trade facilitation, regional connectivity corridors, and developmental projects supported by India in Myanmar.
In addition to official meetings in Nay Pyi Taw, Singh is scheduled to travel to Yangonwhere he will interact with members of the Indian diaspora as well as individuals and groups identified as “Friends of India.” These interactions are expected to reinforce people-to-people ties and highlight the role of the diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations.
The visit comes at a time when India continues to engage Myanmar on multiple fronts, balancing strategic, economic, and regional considerations. Myanmar holds significance for India not only as a neighbouring country but also as a gateway to Southeast Asia, making bilateral cooperation critical for regional connectivity and stability.
Analysts suggest that participation in the presidential inauguration signals India’s intent to maintain diplomatic continuity and engagement with Myanmar’s leadership, while also advancing mutual interests in trade and development.
The Ministry of External Affairs has emphasised that the visit reflects India’s commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations and supporting ongoing cooperation initiatives. Further developments are expected following the meetings and engagements scheduled during the visit.
