Bollywood is filled with movies that highlight the plight of people in India. Whether based on the misery of migrant labourers or the airstrike retaliation by India, Bollywood has left no stone unturned in filming and projecting these events for public awareness. Similarly, one film released in 2022 turned out to be a people’s favourite and also minted money at the box office. The narrative of the film focuses on the predicament of the Kashmiri Hindus living in the Kashmir Valley. With that, it is now easy to understand which movie we are talking about.

The film is none other than The Kashmir Files. Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the movie presents a fictional storyline centred around the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Indian-administered Kashmir. The film focuses on the genocide that took place during that year. The intense drama switches between the contemporary period set in 2020 and flashbacks to 1989–1990 throughout the film.

Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews. Accolades were given for its cinematography and the performances of the ensemble cast; however, the storyline faced criticism for attempting to reinterpret established history and for allegedly promoting Islamophobia.
