India’s new strategy in Indo-Pacific, increasing defense cooperation with maritime partners amid China’s challenge
New Delhi. Amidst the changing strategic equations in the Indo-Pacific region, India is engaged in giving a new direction to maritime security and defense cooperation. On the one hand, New Delhi is strengthening regional cooperation through multilateral forums like Quad and ASEAN, while on the other hand it is also accelerating the expansion of bilateral defense relations with major countries of the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific. Experts believe that the objective of this policy is to increase regional security cooperation as well as to provide new possibilities to India’s defense industry.
Defense partnership with Australia gets new momentum
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia, both the countries agreed to further strengthen defense cooperation. Both sides announced several steps to enhance cooperation in the field of mutual deployment of military aircraft, defense research and innovation, joint defense projects and maritime security. The aim of these initiatives is to further strengthen strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.
Strategic cooperation is also increasing with Indonesia
India has also given priority to defense and maritime cooperation with Indonesia. The development of Sabang Port is being considered an important step towards strengthening India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean. Apart from this, discussions are also going on between the two countries to increase cooperation on defense equipment and missile systems.
Emphasis on defense exports along with defense cooperation
Defense experts say that India does not want to be limited to just strategic partnerships, but is also promoting defense production and defense exports with friendly countries. On one hand, this will strengthen the security capabilities of partner countries, while on the other hand, Indian defense industry will get an opportunity to expand in the global market.
Special focus on Indian Ocean region
India has increased security cooperation with many countries in the Indian Ocean region in the last few years. Relations are being strengthened particularly with countries that are keen to enhance cooperation with India in areas such as maritime security, disaster relief, capacity building and defense training.
According to analysts, the strategy is aimed at maintaining stability in the region, ensuring the security of sea lanes and building long-term trust with partner countries.
Cooperation also increased with Singapore and Seychelles
India has expanded the scope of cooperation with Singapore in military exercises, defense industry and training programs. At the same time, maritime security and defense cooperation with Seychelles has also been strengthened. In recent times, the appointment of defense advisors and collaborative programs related to maritime security have been taken forward.
Strategic expansion in the changing geopolitical environment
Experts believe that amid growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region, India is paying equal attention to both multilateral fora and bilateral partnerships. The policy aims to strengthen maritime security, defense cooperation, technological partnership and regional stability, so as to expand India’s strategic role and influence in the changing global security landscape.
