India’s sharp attack on Pakistan in UN, calls attacks on Afghan civilians inhuman

New Delhi, 21 May 2026: India raised questions on Pakistan’s dual policy, saying that on one hand it talks about international law while on the other hand it brutally kills civilians in Afghanistan. The attacks took place during Islam’s holy month of Ramadan and targeted people who were leaving the mosque after evening prayers.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations P Harish told the Security Council that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that 750 civilians were killed or injured in cross-border military action by the Pakistan Army in the first three months of 2026. Most of these incidents occurred due to air strikes.

Participating in the open debate on “Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict” organized under the chairmanship of China, Harish responded to the anti-India statement of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed. Pakistan had raised the issue of Kashmir during this period. Harish said, “The world understands Pakistan’s propaganda very well. There is neither trust in it, nor respect for law nor morality.”

He said it is ironical that Pakistan, whose history is replete with crimes like genocide, is commenting on India’s completely internal affairs. It is extremely hypocritical that on one hand big talk is made about international law and on the other hand innocent civilians are targeted in the dark. The Permanent Representative of India, citing UNAMA’s report ‘Cross-Border Civilian Casualties in Afghanistan’ released on May 10, mentioned the attack on a drug de-addiction center in Afghanistan.

He said that in March this year, during the holy month of Ramadan, when people were in an atmosphere of peace, introspection and compassion, Pakistan carried out a very brutal air attack on Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul. He said, “According to UNAMA, 269 civilians were killed and 122 people were injured in this shameful and inhumane attack. This was a hospital which could in no way be called a military base.” Citing UNAMA report, he said that Pakistan’s air strikes took place at a time when Taraweeh prayers had ended and many patients were coming out of the mosque.

He said that due to cross-border violence in Pakistan, more than 94,000 people were forced to become refugees in Afghanistan. Harish said that such violent actions of Pakistan are nothing new. This is the same country that dropped bombs and systematically massacred its own people. Referring to the atrocities committed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he said that during Operation Searchlight, Pakistan had carried out horrific incidents like organized genocide against its own citizens and gang rape of four lakh women.
