India’s strength will double, there is a hint of a new defense deal with Russia
New Delhi. Amidst increasing global tension and changing security equations, India is moving towards strengthening its air security system. According to reports, the country is preparing to acquire five additional S-400 air defense systems from Russia. In this regard, a consensus has been reached in the defense procurement mechanism at the initial level and now the proposal will go through the process of high level approval.
Why is this step important?
India has already included the S-400 system in its strategic defense architecture. This system has the capability to identify and shoot down enemy aircraft, drones and missiles from long ranges. India currently has three systems in operation, while two more units are likely to be inducted soon. If five new systems are added, a multi-layered air defense shield can be created in various strategic areas of the country. This will further strengthen the security of border areas and important military bases.
Steps after recent events
The Indian air defense system played an important role during the regional tensions last year. Defense experts believe that aerial security has become the most decisive element in modern warfare. In the era of drones, cruise missiles and long-range precision strike weapons, strong air defense systems are considered the first line of defense of any country.
How will the procurement process proceed?
The defense procurement process goes through several stages. After the requirement is approved, cost determination is negotiated. After this, financial examination and finally final approval is taken from the Cabinet Committee on Security. It is believed that if the proposal is approved, the systems will be purchased directly from Russia, while the role of Indian companies may increase in maintenance and technical cooperation.
Pantsir system also considered
Along with this, purchase of Pantsir missile system is also being considered to strengthen short-range security. This system is especially known for providing protection against drones, helicopters, rockets and short-range missiles. The strategy is to create a short-range security layer along with the long-range S-400 system, so that a multi-layered security architecture can be created.
If this deal takes final form, it is sure to have an impact on the strategic balance in South Asia. India’s increasing air defense capability will be a clear signal to neighboring countries that the country does not want to be lax in matters of its security.
