IndiGo backs Bengaluru startup building flying taxi

IndiGo has entered India’s emerging electric air taxi market with an equity investment in Bengaluru-based startup Sarla Aviation.

According to regulatory filings, the airline invested ₹10 crore in January through its venture arm, IndiGo Ventures. The move signals growing confidence in future urban air mobility solutions.

Bengaluru startup building flying taxi

Founded in 2023, Sarla Aviation is developing a hybrid-electric eVTOL aircraft designed for city transport. eVTOL stands for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, widely seen as the next frontier in short-distance urban travel.

Its flagship aircraft, named Shunya, is planned for launch in Bengaluru by 2028.

The aircraft is expected to seat six passengers and one pilot. It will also have a cargo version capable of carrying payloads up to 680 kilograms.

Strong investor backing

Sarla Aviation had earlier raised $10 million in January 2025 in a funding round led by Accel. Other investors included Binny Bansal, Nikhil Kamath and Sriharsha Majety.

The startup has reportedly raised a total of $13.4 million across five funding rounds so far.

Bengaluru eyes future mobility leadership

With severe traffic congestion and growing demand for smart transport, Bengaluru is emerging as a natural testing ground for advanced mobility projects. If successful, air taxis could one day reduce travel times across the city dramatically.

Global trend reaches India

Worldwide, airlines such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have also backed air taxi ventures, showing that the sector is gaining serious commercial interest.#Bengaluru #IndiGo #FlyingTaxi #Startup #Technology #newskarnataka
