Indira Gandhi wanted to make Raj Kapoor’s daughter as her daughter-in-law, but fate wrote a different story.

New Delhi .There are many such stories in the history of Indian politics and Hindi cinema, where a glimpse of the close relationship between the film world and the corridors of power is visible. One such interesting incident is said to be related to Indira Gandhi and the Kapoor family, in which the possibility of going beyond friendship to kinship was even discussed.

There was considered to be a deep respect and close relationship between the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the famous actor-director Raj Kapoor. The two families had a long-standing friendly relationship and were seen interacting with each other on several occasions. Due to this closeness, there came a time when there was talk of converting relationships into family bonds.

According to reports and mention in senior journalist Rashid Kidwai’s book, Indira Gandhi wanted her son Rajiv Gandhi to marry Raj Kapoor’s elder daughter Ritu Nanda. This idea was not based only on social or political equations, but was also given importance because of the mutual respect and personal relationships that existed between the two families.

It is said that Indira Gandhi had special affection for the Kapoor family and wanted to further strengthen this relationship. However this proposal did not go ahead and circumstances prevented this potential relationship from being realised. During the same period, Rajiv Gandhi met Sonia Gandhi abroad, and the relationship between the two gradually grew stronger.

Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi later got married in the year 1968, after which this family story moved in a different direction. On the other hand, Ritu Nanda got married to industrialist Rajan Nanda and got busy in her personal life. In this way the possibility of kinship between two big families remained only an interesting chapter of history.
