Indonesia Open: Sindhu’s winning start, Hariharan-Arjun pair also won by defeating Malaysian rivals

Jakarta. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, despite going through some awkward moments, entered the second round of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament with a straight game win here on Tuesday, but Kidambi Srikanth failed to cross the first round hurdle. Sindhu defeated Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 25-23, 21-16 in 51 minutes in the women’s singles match of this Super 1000 badminton tournament.

Former world champion Sindhu showed aggressive play from the beginning

They faced a tough challenge in the first game but they maintained their rhythm from the beginning till the end and won the game straight away. Unseeded Indian Sindhu is likely to face defending Olympic champion and world number one Ahn Se-Young, who had defeated her in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open last week, in the second round. The record of Indian players against Aan is not good. Sindhu had to face defeat in all the nine matches played between these two players so far.

Srikanth’s journey ends

Srikanth crashed out of the tournament after losing to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 19-21, 15-21 in the first round of men’s singles. In the women’s category, Malvika Bansod was also eliminated from the tournament in the first round itself. She was easily defeated by seventh seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 21-12, 21-10.

Indian pair’s success, defeating Malaysian rivals and entering the next round

In the men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun displayed a stellar performance and entered the second round with a 21-18, 21-10 win over the higher-ranked Malaysian pair of Noor Mohd Azrin Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong.
