‘Indus water treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism’, New Delhi reiterated

India has made it clear to the United Nations that India will not negotiate on the Indus Water Treaty until Pakistan stops cross-border terrorism. New Delhi has put the deal on hold since last April following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahelgam last year. “Pakistan must protect the sanctity of human life before talking about protecting the sanctity of the agreement,” India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations P Harish said at a function organized by the United Nations to mark the World Water Day. There will be no talk of the Indus Water Sharing Agreement until Pakistan, the ‘hotbed of global terror’, mends its behavior.”

P Harish said, “India has always been a responsible upstream state. But the sense of responsibility is double-edged. Pakistan must unconditionally shun terrorism as an instrument of its state policy. India also claims that Pakistan’s behavior is disrupting an event organized on the occasion of International Water Day. The main objective of the event was to ensure safe water and sanitation for all, a UN Sustainable Development Goal. But Pakistan tries to garner sympathy by claiming to be a victim country.

After that, Harish launched a fierce attack on Islamabad. said, “India signed the Indus Water Treaty with good intentions, goodwill and friendship. But Pakistan has violated this trust by waging three wars and thousands of terrorist attacks on India. Thousands of innocent Indian lives have been lost in Pak-sponsored terrorist attacks.”

It should be noted that after the Pahalgaon incident, the Indian government has taken several diplomatic steps against Pakistan. New Delhi has temporarily suspended the Indus Water Sharing Agreement signed with Pakistan in 1960. Islamabad has claimed India’s move as a violation of the Vienna Convention.
