Inside 160-year-old Saigon seminary, resting place of Vietnam’s recently deceased cardinal
Located at 6 Ton Duc Thang Street, the historic complex was constructed under French priest Théodore Louis Wibaux. The sprawling grounds originally encompassed the major seminary, St. Paul’s Church, St. Paul’s Minor Seminary, a chapel, and a convent.
After 1975 when the Vietnam War ended, portions of the estate were repurposed to accommodate Saigon University, new residential neighborhoods, and the development of Nguyen Huu Canh Street.
Today, the seminary remains one of the most significant religious sites within the local Archdiocese.
It now serves as the final resting place for Cardinal Pham Minh Man, who passed away on March 22 after prolonged illness, aged 92. He was a historic figure, standing as one of only six Vietnamese clergymen ever elevated to the rank of cardinal, the highest position in the Roman Catholic Church beneath the Pope.
