The film business can heap a sigh of relief as 2024 comes to an end. Since more films did well at the box office this year than in past years, theaters around the world saw a rebound. Most major cities saw an increase in overall box office attendance and ticket sales, and up to seven films made over half a billion dollars globally. One of these went on to earn $1.7 billion worldwide and made it into the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time.

Deadpool & Wolverine became the year’s highest-grossing live-action movie after surpassing one billion dollars. Nevertheless, Inside Out 2, a Pixar animated film, outperformed it. The first film directed by Kelsey Mann was a huge success, earning $1.698 billion worldwide. In addition to being the highest-grossing movie of 2024, it also broke the record set by The Lion King and became the highest-grossing animated movie ever. It starred the terrific voice cast including Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser

Venom: The Last Dance and Deadpool & Wolverine were Marvel-Sony’s best films of the year. While Venom 3 only made $475 million, Deadpool 3 was a global box office success, grossing $1.338 billion. The Wizard of Oz spinoff Wicked ($585 million), Monsterverse’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($571 million), Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two ($714 million), and the Chinese hit YOLO ($480 million) came in between. The list also included three more animated feature films: Despicable Me 4 ($969 million), Moana 2 ($821 million and climbing), and Kung Fu Panda 4 ($547 million).
