A powerful cold front is set to bring temperatures in mountain areas to below 3 degrees Celsius, with a likelihood of frost, while the Red River Delta, including Hanoi, may see lows of 11 degrees Celsius.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that the cold air will arrive in the northeastern region late on Jan. 25 and early Jan. 26, gradually spreading to the northern plains and northwestern areas.
Average daily temperatures are expected to range between 13-15 degrees Celsius, and below 13 degrees in mountainous regions. In high-altitude areas, frost and freezing rain are likely.
According to American weather site AccuWeather, Hanoi’s temperatures will range from 17 to 23 degrees on Friday but will then dip further, with daytime highs of 20-21 degrees and nighttime lows of 11 degrees by Jan. 28.
In areas above 1,500 meters, such as Sa Pa, temperatures will fall from 10-21 degrees on Friday to just 1-5 degrees on Jan. 27-28, with frost and freezing conditions expected on mountain peaks.
The cold air mass is also forecast to reach the south-central region on Jan. 26-27. Northern central provinces will experience lows of 9-12 degrees, and 6-8 degrees in mountainous areas. Quang Binh to Hue will see temperatures between 14-17 degrees, while Da Nang to Quang Ngai will record 16-19 degrees.
Scattered showers are expected across northern and north-central Vietnam starting the night of Jan. 25, with rain spreading further into central regions from Jan. 26-28.
