International Crime Tribunal of Bangladesh awarded death sentence to Sheikh Hasina

The International Crime Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Monday (17 November 2025) convicted former PM Sheikh Hasina and sentenced her to death. While giving the verdict on the punishment, the court said that Sheikh Hasina deserves the harshest punishment. The former PM of Bangladesh described ICT as a non-international organization and said that this decision is completely politically motivated.

The ICT also ruled against two associates of Sheikh Hasina, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun. Sheikh Hasina said, ‘This decision was decided earlier. I was neither given a chance to present my side nor to be represented by my lawyer. There is nothing international in ICT.

Sheikh Hasina is accused of instigating the police and armed men associated with the Awami League to attack civilians. This included serious cases like murder, attempt to murder. The court accepted that this violence took place under the direction and patronage of Hasina. According to the court, the former PM of Bangladesh ordered the use of lethal weapons, helicopters, and drones to suppress student protests.

The most serious allegation against Sheikh Hasina was that on her instructions the security forces shot dead 5 protesters. According to the tribunal, no less than death penalty can be given for this crime. The court has accepted that Sheikh Hasina has committed crimes against humanity. The court said that Sheikh Hasina has been found guilty in three cases. Justice Ghulam Murtuza Majumdar said, ‘This crime against humanity has crossed all limits. This decision was also telecast live on national television.

After coming to India from Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina is staying in the safe shelter in Delhi since August 2024. No matter how delicate this matter may become after the ICT decision, if India wants, it can refuse to hand over Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh. Talking about its political aspect, Sheikh Hasina has been a reliable partner for India for decades.

Sheikh Hasina has made a major contribution in the security of the border area, anti-terrorism operations and stability of the North-East, while the current government of Mohammad Yunus is continuously spewing venom against India. Recently, Mohammad Yunus had released the map of Greater Bangladesh, in which the eastern states of India were described as part of his country. Apart from this, Bangladesh is currently sitting in the lap of Pakistan.

Recently, Pakistan Army’s number two officer and PAK Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf visited Dhaka. Several meetings have taken place between military officials of Pakistan and Bangladesh in recent months. Bangladesh is now openly using its land against India. Many defense experts believe that Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka has become an ISI base. India would not want to end the old relationship by suddenly sending them back to such an environment.
