International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2024: Powerful quotes, posters and speeches

Mumbai: Violence against women and girls remains one of the most widespread and persistent violations of human rights globally. Nearly one in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence, often by an intimate partner or non-partner, at some point in their lives. The crisis extends beyond domestic spaces, with women facing violence in workplaces, online environments, and conflict zones.

Women and girls in vulnerable situations—such as those in conflict zones, migrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, indigenous populations, or those with disabilities—face heightened risks.

Violence against women manifests in various harmful forms, many of which are often concealed by societal stigma and silence. This includes physical violence, such as intimate partner abuse, marital rape, and femicide, as well as sexual violence, including rape, sexual harassment, unwanted advances, and exploitation.

Women also face psychological abuse, coercion, and manipulation, along with severe violations like human trafficking, forced labour, and sexual exploitation. Additionally, harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage contribute to the widespread violence that women endure.

Ending this violence requires strong actions, including holding perpetrators accountable, increasing investment in women’s rights movements, and developing comprehensive, well-funded national strategies.

Starting on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and ending on December 10, International Human Rights Day, the UNiTE campaign will focus on raising awareness about the growing violence against women.

The 2024 theme, Every 10 Minutes, a Woman is Killed. #NoExcusecalls for action and accountability from decision-makers to protect women’s rights and end gender-based violence.

Violence remains a significant barrier to gender equality, peace, development, and the realisation of women’s human rights. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring no one is left behind is impossible without addressing and eliminating violence against women and girls.

Share impactful quotes, eye-opening posters, and motivating speeches aimed at bringing together individuals, organisations, and governments to strengthen the fight for women’s rights and safety on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2024.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women  speech

Speech 1:

Honourable guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we gather to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a day that holds great significance in raising awareness about the violence that women across the world endure. This day is not just a reminder of the physical, emotional, and psychological scars that women suffer, but also a call to action. A call for us to stand together, to speak out, and to ensure that the violence stops.

Violence against women is one of the most widespread human rights violations. It affects women in every part of the world, irrespective of their age, background, or status. One in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime. This statistic is not just a number; it represents the pain, trauma, and despair that countless women carry.

The forms of violence vary- intimate partner abuse, sexual violence, trafficking, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, and so much more. What is common across all of these forms is that they strip women of their dignity and humanity. But it is time to take a stand, time to demand justice, and time to ensure that no woman has to endure violence in silence.

On this day, we also honour the strength, resilience, and courage of women who have survived such violence. Their voices inspire us to act, to challenge outdated norms, and to push for societal change. The cycle of violence must end, but that can only happen when each of us commits to playing a part in this fight—whether through supporting victims, raising awareness, or demanding stronger laws.

Let us unite today to take a stand against violence. Let us ensure that every woman and girl, regardless of where she lives, can live a life free from violence, free from fear, and with the opportunity to realize her full potential.

Thank you.

Speech 2:

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,

Today, we come together to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a day of reflection, solidarity, and a call to action. This day serves as a reminder that violence against women remains one of the most urgent global issues, one that cuts across cultures, societies, and borders. It is a violation of human rights that affects women and girls in every corner of the world.

Every day, countless women face physical, sexual, and emotional violence, often at the hands of those who are supposed to protect them. The statistics are shocking, and yet, they only tell part of the story. Behind every number, there is a woman—a mother, a daughter, a sister—whose life has been shattered by violence.

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal issue. It reflects deep-rooted inequalities and reinforces harmful stereotypes. And it is only when we recognise the importance of gender equality and stand united that we can break this cycle of violence.

We must work together—governments, organisations, communities, and individuals—to change the narrative. We must provide support for survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and create a society where every woman and girl can live free from fear. The work we do today will lay the foundation for a future where violence is no longer a reality for women.

On this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to ending violence against women and girls. Let us advocate for stronger policies, better support systems, and a culture of respect and equality. Let us stand together because together we can end violence, empower women, and build a world where no woman ever has to live in fear.

Thank you.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for women’s rights and safety is far from over. Together, we can build a future where every woman and girl can live in peace, free from the threat of violence. Let us take a stand today to ensure that violence against women becomes a thing of the past.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let us also renew our commitment to creating a world where women are empowered, protected, and respected. The fight against violence is one that we must all take up—governments, organisations, communities, and individuals alike. By working together, we can eliminate violence and ensure that all women and girls have the freedom to live their lives to the fullest, without fear, violence, or discrimination.
