Millions of people around the world start their day with tea. This is the reason why tea is not just a drink but has become an important part of people’s daily routine and culture. After water, tea is considered to be the most consumed beverage in the world. Considering the popularity of tea and its social and economic importance, International Tea Day is celebrated every year on 21 May.

The purpose of this special day is to honor the hard work of people associated with the tea industry and to spread awareness about the problems of workers and small producers associated with tea production.

The day starts with tea

Most people like to drink tea as soon as they wake up in the morning. Many people consume green tea before breakfast, while for some people the morning is considered incomplete without tea. Many varieties of tea have also become popular with time.

Today many types of tea are liked among the people like green tea, black tea, lemon tea, white tea and rose tea. Along with taste, people also consume different types of tea for health benefits.

How was tea discovered?

The history of tea is considered to be about five thousand years old. It started from China. According to belief, China’s Emperor Shen Nung was once boiling water while sitting under a tree with his soldiers. Then, with the wind, some tea leaves fell into the boiling water.

After some time the color of the water changed and a pleasant smell started coming from it. When the emperor drank that drink, he liked its taste very much. This incident is considered to be the beginning of the discovery of tea.

International Tea Day begins

The first movement regarding International Tea Day started in the year 2005. The initiative was supported by small tea growers, labor organizations and social organizations in Asia and Africa. Their objective was to provide fair prices to tea growers and raise awareness about workers’ rights.

Later the United Nations officially declared 21 May as International Tea Day. This day is considered an opportunity to honor the livelihood and contribution of millions of families associated with the tea industry.
