Investment of Rs 1.6 lakh crore, where has India’s Semiconductor Mission reached till now?

The dominance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing in the digital world. Bharat had started this mission in the year 2021 to make itself self-reliant in the matter of semiconductors used in electronic cars, computers and other new-age gadgets. Billions of rupees have been spent in 5 years so that India can become a leader in this field. On the occasion of August 15 last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that by 2026 India will start consuming semiconductors worth $80 billion and by 2030 this figure will reach $110 billion. There is an investment plan of Rs 1.6 lakh crore in India and many companies have already started their work.

 

Even in the budget of year 2026-27, Rs 40 thousand crores have been kept separately for the semiconductor sector. Earlier, a total of 10 semiconductor plants and units have been approved in the country with an investment of about Rs 1.6 lakh crore till August 2025. What was asked in Parliament?

 

In the recently concluded budget session, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Neeraj Dangi had asked a question regarding the Semiconductor Mission. His questions were that how much total domestic and foreign investment has taken place in the semiconductor manufacturing sector so far? His second question was that if there is project wise details then it should be given.

 

 

In response to this question, Jitin Prasad, Minister of State in the Electronics and Information Technology Ministry, has given a written answer in the Parliament. He has mentioned a total of 6 schemes which are related to this semiconductor mission.

These schemes are:-

  1. Semicon India Scheme
  2. PLI Scheme for IT Hardware and Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing
  3. Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS)
  4. Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS)
  5. Electronics Manufacturing Clusters Scheme (EMC)
  6. Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS)

 

Out of this, Semicon India Program has been started with a cost of Rs 76 thousand crore so that semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem can be created in India. Under this, a total of 10 projects have been approved by the government whose total cost is Rs 1.6 lakh crore.

Out of these 10, two are packaging units and two are fabrication units. This includes silicon fabrication, silicon carbide fabrication, advanced packaging and memory packaging units etc. The government has said that some of these units are yet to be installed and production has started in 4 units.

How many companies got help?

 

The government has said in its reply that a total of 24 chip design projects have been supported through the Startup Mission. 16 units have crossed the tapout stage and 13 projects have received funding from venture capitalists. Additionally, EDA tools have been provided in 350 universities which have been used by 65 thousand engineers.

The government says that India is strong in terms of chip design and this is also its capability. India is rich in design talent and out of all the semiconductor design engineers in the world, 20% are of Indian origin.

What is the status of the companies?

 

Micron Technology is setting up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Gujarat at a cost of Rs 22,516 crore. Manufacturing and assembling of DRAM and NAND products will be done in this unit. This unit will have the capacity to make 14 million units of semiconductor every week.

 

Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is setting up a unit in Gujarat with the help of Rs 91,526 crore. This unit is being set up in partnership with PSMC of Taiwan. 50 thousand wafers will be made every month in this company.

TEPL itself is setting up a plant in Assam at a cost of Rs 27,120 crore which will meet the domestic and foreign demand. This plant can produce 4.8 crore units every day. A plant of CG Power and Industrial Solution Limited is being set up in Gujarat which will cost Rs 7584 crore. This unit is a joint venture between STARS Microelectronics of Thailand and Renesas Electronics of America. This company will be able to produce 1.5 crore units every day.

Keyence Technology India Limited (KTIL) is setting up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Gujarat at a cost of Rs 3307 crore. 64 lakh chips can be made every day in this unit.

HCL-Foxconn together are setting up a plant in Uttar Pradesh at a cost of Rs 3706 crore. In this plant, display driver IC i.e. DCIC will be made using gold bump technology. For this, Taiwan’s Hon Hai company will provide technology. This company can make 20 thousand wafers every month or 3.6 crore chips every month.

 

Similarly, a company named 3D Glass Solutions is setting up a plant in Odisha by investing Rs 1943 crore. SiSCem is investing Rs 2066 crore in Odisha, Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL) is investing Rs 117 crore in Punjab and ASIP is investing Rs 480 crore in Andhra Pradesh.
