IOC pauses 2030 Youth Olympics host selection
The International Olympic Committee has paused the host selection process for the 2030 Youth Olympic Games, putting India’s ambitions of staging the event on hold.
India was among the countries interested in hosting the 2030 edition as part of its broader push to establish itself as a major destination for international sporting events ahead of its proposed bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
IOC president Kirsty Coventry said the decision to pause the process came after “inconclusive results” from consultations with National Olympic Committees and international federations regarding the purpose and direction of the Youth Olympics.
IOC reassessing future of Youth Games
The host election for the 2030 edition had been expected later this year, but the IOC has now decided to undertake a wider review of its youth engagement strategy before moving ahead with future editions.
Coventry said the Olympic movement currently lacks a clear and unified vision for the Youth Olympic Games and stressed the need to redefine how the event should connect with younger audiences globally.
Despite the pause, the IOC confirmed its commitment to upcoming Youth Olympic events, including the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics in Italy.
The Youth Olympics, introduced in 2010 for athletes aged between 14 and 18, have been viewed by several countries as an important stepping stone toward hosting larger Olympic events.
For India, the delay temporarily stalls another potential opportunity to showcase its hosting capabilities on the international stage as it continues expanding its ambitions in global sport.
