iPhone 17 Air: All the information leaked so far about Apple's slimmest iPhone
Delhi Delhi. There may be a significant change in Apple's iPhone lineup next year. Several reports point to a new iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim in the series, which will replace the Plus model and be Apple's thinnest iPhone device to date. From its thickness to its design to its specifications, a lot has already been leaked about the iPhone 17 Air, but since the proposed launch timeline of the next flagship iPhone series is more than 10 months away, there is a change in the size of the Air. There is always a possibility. Nevertheless, here is all the information that has been leaked so far about the iPhone 17 Air.
The thinnest iPhone ever
According to some early leaks, the iPhone 17 Air could be Apple's thinnest smartphone, surpassing the iPhone 6s. Confirming those leaks, industry insiders Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu have said that the iPhone 17 Air could be 6mm thick, while the iPhone 6s is 6.4mm thick. However, recently, The Information said that iPhone 17 Air prototypes are 5 to 6 millimeters thick, indicating that the device could also be 5 mm thick. If there is some truth to these rumors, the iPhone 17 Air could be one of the thinnest smartphones ever made.
design
The slimmer design on the iPhone 17 Air would not be possible without other necessary changes to the aesthetics of the device. The Information said Apple is focusing on form more than function, which is why the iPhone 17 Air may not be eligible for a titanium upgrade for its body. Apple may retain the aluminum frame on next year's Air models. While other changes are unclear, there are also reports that the iPhone 17 Air could adopt the display size of the Plus model and measure almost exactly the same.
specifications
The reduced thickness on the iPhone 17 Air will potentially come at the expense of premium specifications and features.
As Kuo and Pu reported, the iPhone 17 Air may lack mmWave 5G, which could impact user experience, especially in the US. This is because Apple can pilot its in-house 5G modem with the Air models. Apple's own 5G model is a first-generation component, so it can't match Qualcomm's 5G chips, which Apple currently uses in its devices with cellular connectivity. It may also lack a physical SIM card slot, similar to recent iPhone models sold in the US. While customers in the US may not notice the change, the lack of a physical SIM card slot could be a big change for customers elsewhere, especially in markets where eSIMs are not popular or not even supported. Also, selling the iPhone 17 Air in China, where eSIM functionality is not supported, could be a challenge for Apple.
The iPhone 17 Air may also ditch the secondary speaker to compensate for the thinness. According to The Information, the upcoming iPhone models may not have a second speaker at the bottom. This means that the Air model may not provide a stereo sound experience and may not appeal to customers considering its price.
Apple may also remove the secondary camera on the iPhone 17 Air and give it a “larger, focused camera bump” on the back. Information has suggested that a change in camera design could be one of the results of the effort to reduce thickness. It could be a 48MP camera with better features. However, according to multiple reports, the front camera may be upgraded from 12MP to 24MP.
Although there may be some major trade-offs on the iPhone 17 Air, it may come with features that Apple's standard iPhone models never had. Both Kuo and Pu have hinted that the iPhone 17 Air could be Apple's first non-Pro model to use a ProMotion display, which can refresh at up to 120Hz. Apple's standard iPhone models have stuck to 60Hz from the first generation, while the Pro models offer a better display experience using ProMotion technology. According to analysts, this may change with the iPhone 17 Air next year. The display of iPhone 17 Air can be 6.6 inches, it is also likely to be 6.55 inches. The display will retain the Dynamic Island, but it may be smaller than the regular display. According to Pu, Apple is using a new “Metalens” technology to fit the sensor and front camera into a smaller pill-shaped cutout. The iPhone 17 Air may also have a new anti-reflection layer for better scratch resistance.
The A19 chip will be used in the iPhone 17 Air like the other models of the series. Although there is a possibility that the device could have an A19 Pro, but reports suggest that it may only have 8GB of RAM, while the Pro model could have 12GB of RAM.
price
According to The Information, the iPhone 17 Air could cost $1,300 or more, which would make it significantly more expensive than the Plus models, whose price remains at $899.
