IPL 2025: Ashwin reveals his top retention picks; MS Dhoni to be retained as a capped player

India National Cricket Team’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that he wouldn’t retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for IPL 2025 despite Chennai Super Kings (CSK) having the option to do so.

Ashwin mentioned that he would instead pick the legendary wicket-keeper as a capped player along with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana.

The BCCI brought back the scrapped rule which allows the franchises to retain Indian players as uncapped players who haven’t played international cricket for five years or don’t have central contracts. Dhoni last played for the Men in Blue in July 2019.

Former players and fans felt that this rule was reintroduced to allow MS Dhoni to play another season in the cash-rich league. According to Ashwin, the five-time champions must retain their former captain as a capped player even though they have the option of keeping him as an uncapped cricketer.

“I will give a new perspective. I will retain MS Dhoni as a capped player and not as an uncapped player. I will also retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana,” he said.

Ashwin named Sameer Rizvi (uncapped player) as his sixth retention.

“Sameer Rizvi will be my sixth retention.”

Dhoni will be paid INR 4 crore if the management decides to retain him as an uncapped player.

Meanwhile, the top retention will get INR 18 crore and the second will take home INR 14 crore. The third, fourth, and fifth retained players will pocket INR 11 crore, INR 18 crore, and INR 14 crore respectively.

Each team can retain a maximum of five capped players and a maximum of two uncapped cricketers.
