IPL 2025 mega auction: Contrasting reports on dates, venue spark confusion

New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction 2025 schedule date is a much-anticipated thing for the fans and the franchises after the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) IPL governing council announced the regulations for teams to retain players last month.

The 10 existing franchises are set with a deadline to submit their choice of retention list by October 31. The Indian cricket board is yet to confirm an official date to host the IPL mega auction, which will be held after three years. Reports have suggested that the BCCI is keen on having the auction in a foreign country for consecutive years after the IPL 2024 auctions were staged in Dubai.

A couple of reports have mentioned that the Indian cricket board plans to hold the IPL mega auction in the last week of November, though the dates are contrasting.

According to a report by The Times of India, the BCCI will host the IPL 2025 mega auction on November 30 this year. On the other hand, a Sportstar report mentioned that the auction is likely to be held on either November 24 or November 25 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The official announcement from the BCCI is due with franchises seeking response at the earliest to arrange for logistics for the big auction.

IPL 2025 auction rules

The retention rules allowed each of the 10 franchise to retain not more than six players, including the right-to-match (RTM) options during the auction. The retentions for players is a bit complex for the franchises. The top-choice candidate player has to be offered INR 18 crore and the second and third will be retained at INR 14 crore and INR 11 crore, respectively.

However, if a franchsie wants to retain a fourth player then it will again have to shell out INR 18 crore. Here’s the breakdown of prices for retention of players.

Player 1 retention price: INR 18 crore

Player 2 retention price: INR 14 crore

Player 3 retention price: INR 11 crore

Player 4 retention price: INR 18 crore

Player 5 retention price: INR 14 crore

A team can only retain five capped players and not more than two uncapped players. An uncapped player can be retained for INR 4 crore. In the BCCI’s uncapped player rule change, any Indian who hasn’t played international cricket for last five years or isn’t part of the Indian board’s central contract list is eligible to be retained as an ‘uncapped player’.

Each IPL team is allotted a purse of INR 120 crore for the IPL 2025 mega auction. The retention of players will be deducted from the same purse amount. The board is yet to direct the official rules of IPL 2025 mega auction.
