IPL 2025 mega auction to take place in Riyadh, likely to clash with Ind-Aus 1st Test

New Delhi: The countdown for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction has begun after all ten franchises revealed their final list of retained players on October 31. While some franchises let go of a majority of their squad, some retained their core by spending big money on their retentions. All teams will be eagerly waiting for the IPL 2025 mega auction which is set to take place later this month.

As per a report in ANI, the IPL 2025 mega auction is likely to take place in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh. The two-day auction is likely to take place on November 24 and 25. If the auction takes place on the said dates, it will not be good news for the official broadcaster as the showpiece event will clash with the first Test between India and Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

India are scheduled to take on Australia in the 1st Test of the five-match series in Perth starting November 22. The BCCI and the IPL Governing Council might consider hosting the IPL 2025 mega auction in the afternoon time to avoid major conflict with the India-Australia Test series considering the time difference with Australia.

A total of 46 players were retained by the ten IPL franchises ahead of the deadline on October 31. The franchises spent a total of Rs 558.50 crore on their retentions and will head into the auction looking to build strong teams around their core group of players. Rajasthan Royals (RR) were the only team to use all six retention slots while Punjab Kings (PBKS) retained the least number of players – 2.

Pant, Iyer and Rahul among big names at the IPL 2025 mega auction

Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, the three Indian captains who have been released by their respective franchises are among the big names who will be going under the hammer at the mega auction. Pant and Iyer are expected to be among the most expensive picks at the auction as a number of franchises will be eyeing them as possible captaincy contenders.

Several franchises are reportedly also interested in Rahul and will be looking to secure the services of the star wicket-keeper batter. Indian pacers Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal are other prominent names to watch out for at the mega auction.
