The much-anticipated cash-rich Indian Premier League 2025 will kick off on March 14. As reported by ESPNCricinfo on November 22, the 18th season of the lucrative franchise tournament is likely to have its finals on May 25. The location of the finals is not yet confirmed, but it is highly expected that the final match will be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, since the city franchise won the IPL in 2024.
The currently available details suggest that the 2026 season will run from march 15 to 31st May while the 2027 season will occur from March 14 to May 30.
The 2025 season will comprise 74 matches, which is 10 less than the 84 matches indicated by IPL in 2022 when the media rights for the period running from 2023-2027 were sold.
In a significant enhancement for all the 10 IPL teams, it is reported that all full member nations have guaranteed to the BCCI the release of their players for all three seasons.
Cricinfo states that “Cricket Australia has permitted all its players, from international level to domestic, to play in the new season in 2025. In 2026, the team will play a three-match ODI series in Pakistan, which as CA informed, “will be concluding no later than March 18.” The Australian players who will participate in that series, along with those who are resting after the T20 World Cup (scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February-March 2026), will proceed to join the IPL after the completion of the Pakistan tour. In 2027, Australian players will participate in the one-off Test match between Australia and England in March, in connection with the 150 years of Test crickets history and will come in after that match.”
“The ECB has provided a list of 18 centrally contracted players who will be entirely available for the next three seasons of the IPL. One new face missing from the set is among the rest- Ben Stokes, current England Test captain who skipped the advance auction for the 2025 IPL. Players fully available within 2025 and 2027 include the following: Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Olly Stone, and Reece Topley.
The ECB has pointed out a few of these players will be “out of contract” at some point during the 2025-27 period, but while they are contracted to a team, they shall be able to participate in the IPL. England’s non-centrally contracted players will be fully available for the next three seasons.”
