South African Heinrich Klaasen has broken Virat Kohli’s record by becoming the player with highest retained salary after getting Rs 23 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad on IPL 2025 Retention Day.
A hectic Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Retention Day came to a close on Diwali day on Thursday (October 31) as all 10 teams shared their list of retained cricketer with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by the 5pm deadline. At the end of all the back and forth, new salary marks with set in the IPL with massive amounts being offered to the top cricketers to secure their retention ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction later this month.
Former India captain and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli became the first Indian cricketer to be offered a salary in excess of Rs 20 crore. Kohli will be getting Rs 21 crore from IPL 2025 season onwards but he is only the second-highest retention along with West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran – who is also getting the same amount from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
But the honour of the biggest retention goes to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who have decided to shell out Rs 23 crore for South African star batter Heinrich Klaasen. The 33-year-old from Transvaal has got a massive jump or Rs 17.75 crore in salary – up from Rs 5.25 crore which he got from SRH till the IPL 2024 season.

Klaasen is one of the star performers for SRH in their run to the IPL 2024 final, where they lost to Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders. He is one of the finest T20 batters going around the world with 4,861 runs in the format at a strike-rate of 150.35 with 2 hundreds and 31 fifties to his name.
The Proteas batter broke the record set by Virat Kohli when he got Rs 17 crore to be retained by RCB in 2017. Klaasen scored 479 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2024 with a strike-rate of 171.07. Overall in 35 IPL matches, Klaasen has scored 993 runs at an average of 38.19 with 1 hundred and 6 fifties and a strike-rate of 168.30.
“I am delighted to be back in SRH team for IPL 2025. It has been one hell of a ride. The last few seasons we have been together, the support staff and the team have all been incredible. Especially the Orange Army fans have been incredible like family. I hope the Mega Auction is brilliant and we get all our expected targets,” Klassen said after his retention.
