IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians by six wickets, Sameer Rizvi played a stormy innings.
New Delhi. After the brilliant performance of the bowlers led by Mukesh Kumar and captain Axar Patel, the best innings of Sameer Rizvi (90) in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, Delhi Capitals registered their second consecutive win by defeating Mumbai Indians by six wickets with 11 balls remaining here on Saturday.
After restricting Mumbai Indians to 162 runs for six wickets, Delhi achieved the score of 164 runs for four wickets in 18.1 overs. When Rizvi, who played an unbeaten inning of 70 runs in 47 balls against Lucknow Supergiants in the last match, came to the crease, Delhi’s score was seven runs for two wickets.
Apart from playing an inning of 90 runs in 51 balls with the help of seven fours and seven sixes, he also made a partnership of 66 runs in 49 balls for the third wicket with Pathum Nissanka (44) and 78 runs in 39 balls with David Miller (21 not out) for the fourth wicket, giving victory to Delhi. Deepak Chahar, Mitchell Santner and Corbin Bosh took one wicket each for Mumbai.
Suryakumar, who was leading the team due to regular captain Hardik Pandya being unwell, scored 51 runs in 36 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes. He made important partnerships of 53 runs for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma (35) and 37 runs for the fifth wicket with Naman Dhir (28).
Rohit hit five fours and one six in his innings of 26 balls, while Naman hit two fours and one six in his innings of 21 balls. For Delhi, Mukesh Kumar took two wickets for 26 runs in three overs. He got good support from Akshar (one wicket for 22 runs), Lungi Ngidi (one wicket for 34 runs), Vipraj Nigam (one wicket for 24 runs) and T. Natarajan (one wicket for 24 runs).
Delhi had a very poor start while chasing the target. In the first over itself, KL Rahul (1) got caught by wicketkeeper Rickelton while trying to glance the ball going out of Deepak Chahar’s leg stump, while in the next over, Nitish Rana was run out on a direct throw from Jasprit Bumrah without opening the account. Meanwhile, Chahar failed to catch Nissanka’s hard hit on his own ball and the Sri Lankan batsman celebrated his life with two fours against Santner in the next over.
At the same time, Sameer Rizvi, who played the match-winning innings in the last match, tried to reduce the pressure against Shardul Thakur by hitting sixes and fours on consecutive balls. Delhi scored 42 runs for two wickets in the powerplay, while the team’s half-century was completed on the second ball of the eighth over. Naman took a difficult catch of Nissanka on Bosh’s ball and Rizvi rubbed salt on Mumbai’s wounds by hitting a brilliant six on the next ball.
He welcomed Santner with a four in the next over, but the experienced New Zealand bowler used his experience to put an end to Nissanka’s innings. Rizvi hit two consecutive fours against Bosh, in which his ramp shot over the wicketkeeper was captivating. He ended the pressure maintained by Mumbai bowlers by hitting two sixes on the last two balls of the over.
Delhi scored 20 runs from this 11th over of the innings. Rizvi completed his half-century and Delhi’s century in 31 balls by hitting a six over the cover region against Markandey. Using his steps on the next ball, he sent the ball over midwicket to the visitors. After giving away 34 runs in the last two overs, Suryakumar handed the ball to Bumrah and the experienced bowler proved the captain’s decision right by conceding just one run. However, he did not get good support from other bowlers at the other end.
Rizvi continued his aggressive attitude and easily hit sixes and fours against Chahar and Thakur, leaving the team needing only 25 runs to win in the last five overs. Miller, who was playing cautiously till now, took the team closer to victory by hitting two fours against Bumrah.
Rizvi was caught by Tilak Verma on the ball of Bosh in the 17th over. He missed the century, but got out almost ensuring the team’s victory. On being invited to bat first, Rickelton (nine) welcomed Mukesh with a four, while in the second over, as soon as Rohit came on strike, slogans of Rohit-Rohit started echoing in the field. This former captain of the Indian team increased the enthusiasm of the spectators by hitting fours in the first three balls against Ngidi. Mukesh gave a big success to Delhi by taking two wickets in the over.
After sending Rickelton, who was in excellent form, to the pavilion, he took a brilliant catch of Tilak Verma (0) on his own ball. Suryakumar opened his account with a four on the first ball itself, but after this the Delhi bowlers were successful in controlling the run rate. While Rohit tried to increase the run rate by hitting sixes against Nigam, Suryakumar tried to increase the run rate by hitting sixes against Akshar. Rohit, trying to deliver another crushing blow, was brilliantly caught by Nitish Rana in the cover area on Axar’s ball.
Akshar strengthened his record against Rohit in the IPL by dismissing him for the fourth time in 11 innings. From the other end, Nigam sent Sherfane Rutherford (five) to the pavilion before it became dangerous. Naman, who came to the crease, hit a four against Natarajan, while one run from Suryakumar completed the team’s century in 14 overs.
Suryakumar and Naman hit a six each against Kuldeep, due to which Mumbai scored 17 runs in the 15th over. Suryakumar Yadav completed his half-century by stealing two runs against Ngidi, but was LBW on the next ball. Mitchell Santner (18 not out) and Naman hit fours against Natarajan, but the team struggled to increase the run rate. Bosh (11 not out) hit fours on the last two balls against Mukesh in the last over and took the team beyond 160 runs.
