IPL 2026 final match canceled due to rain, what will happen then! Will this team win? Unique rule of IPL

Ahmedabad: The final of IPL 2026 is to be held on Sunday, May 31 at Narendra Modi Stadium, but the rain has increased the heartbeats of the fans and both the teams. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an alert of rain with thunder and lightning in many parts of Gujarat including Ahmedabad.

Wind can blow at a speed of 60 km in Ahmedabad   

According to IMD scientist Ramashray Yadav, there may be light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Ahmedabad on May 31. There are chances of strong winds, lightning and rain in Gujarat, Saurashtra and South Gujarat till June 4. Wind speed can reach 50 to 60 km per hour.

Today on May 30, heavy rain is expected at some places in Aravali, Mahisagar, Panchmahal and Dahod. The weather will also be bad in Diu, Daman and Dadra-Nagar Haveli. Fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea for the next five days. Due to rain the temperature may drop by 3 to 5 degrees.

What if the match is canceled due to rain?   

Under IPL playoff rules, a reserve day is kept for the final. To complete the match, 120-120 minutes extra time is available on both the main day and reserve day.

If the entire match cannot be played due to rain then an attempt will be made to start the match by reducing the first over. For the result it is necessary for both the teams to play at least 5-5 overs.

If it rains after the start of the match, the winner will be decided by the Duckworth-Lewis rule. There is very little time left and if the weather cooperates then the decision can be taken through Super Over also.

If the reserve day is also washed out, who will become the champion?   

According to IPL Rule 16.11.2, if a match or a Super Over is not played on both the final and reserve day, then the team finishing higher in the league stage will be declared the winner.

However, this time no reserve day has been officially declared for the IPL 2026 final. In the 2023 Chennai-Gujarat final, not a single ball was bowled on 28 May. Then the match took place on 29th May and the result was declared.

This time Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans are face to face. If play is not played on both days, the better ranked team in the points table will lift the trophy directly. According to the league stage, that team is RCB.
