The boundaries of sports in India are blurring in the best possible way, leading to an interesting debate as to who is the real king in the field of fitness. It all started when cricket icon Virat Kohli gave an honest admission about the elite conditioning of hockey players. Not one to let a compliment go by without a little friendly competition, the former Indian hockey captain has officially challenged, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team for a high-stakes fitness competition.
Former Indian hockey captain challenges Virat Kohli to join special training session after fitness comment
In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, the midfield specialist Manpreet Singh responded enthusiastically to Kohli’s recent comments. Considered one of the most physically imposing and conditioned athletes in world hockey, Manpreet did not hesitate to invite the batting maestro and his RCB teammates out of the cricket nets for a joint training session. The final battleground? A head-to-head yo-yo test competition.
While Manpreet showed immense respect towards the unique skill set required in modern cricket, he confidently asserted that the national hockey team will excel in a pure athletic grind.
“If you see, his game is also tough. The ball comes so fast. If you ask us to bat, that will also be difficult. The ball comes at a speed of 150 km/h and that too is difficult. The requirements of their game are different and so are ours. All about their eye contact, batting, positioning and other things,” Manpreet clarified.
Despite recognizing the fast reactions required to withstand triple-digit bowling speeds, the hockey icon believes the constant, high-intensity aerobic and anaerobic demands of hockey will give his team the edge in the battle of stamina.
Kohli praises the fitness of hockey players
This cross-sport challenge originated from Kohli’s amazing tribute to India’s hockey stars at the third edition of the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit. This famous batsman, who single-handedly revolutionized the fitness culture in Indian cricket, shocked the audience when he said that cricketers are far behind their hockey counterparts.
“I know people sometimes look at fitness as something extravagant, but for me, it’s simply what the work demands. If I’m honest, we are not even 15% of the fitness of an Indian hockey player. If hockey players watched our training sessions, they would probably laugh because the demands of their sport are far greater physically.,” Kohli said honestly.
Kohli’s self-awareness highlights the fundamental difference between the sports, with cricket relying on bursts of explosive energy interspersed with brief rests, while hockey demands almost continuous, high-intensity running, rolling substitutions and quick changes of direction.
Interestingly, the famous mental conditioning coach paddy upton had ever repeated this sentiment. Upton had earlier mentioned that if any cricketer has the raw physical and mental stamina to survive a rigorous training camp with the national hockey team, it would only be Kohli. It remains to be seen whether this fascinating crossover challenge actually materialises, but the mutual respect between these elite athletes has set a wonderful benchmark for Indian sporting culture.
