IPL 2026 opening ceremony canceled, BCCI took a big step due to this reason

IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Cancelled: The Indian Premier League is always famous for its glitz and glamour, the big stars of the film world grace the beginning of the league. But, nothing like this is going to be seen in the beginning of the new season. Actually, BCCI and IPL Governing Council have canceled the opening ceremony of the 19th season. This decision has been taken in respect of those who lost their lives in the Chinnaswamy stampede last year.

The first match of IPL 2026 is to be played on March 28 between defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Where 11 people lost their lives in a stampede during RCB’s victory parade, while dozens were injured. Paying tribute to those people, the new season will start with utmost simplicity. That means there will be no singing or playing. This has been confirmed by BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia.

Speaking to a media group, Saikia said, “Due to the tragic incident that took place on June 4 last year, there will be no formal function on the first day of IPL 2026 (in Bengaluru). BCCI will not organize any cultural or entertainment show at the start of the 19th season of IPL in the memory of those killed in that tragic incident.” He further added, “However, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a great entertainment program on the day of the final (May 31) when the season ends.”

It is noteworthy that in IPL 2025, RCB won the trophy for the first time by defeating Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final played in Ahmedabad. The next day, on 4 June 2025, a ceremony to celebrate RCB’s victory was organized at M Chinnaswamy. But, reportedly due to lack of proper security arrangements, 11 people lost their lives in a stampede outside the stadium. After this, RCB and its players had to face severe criticism.
