New Delhi: The playoff race in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has intensified following Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s seven-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), significantly denting their qualification hopes. The five-time champions have slipped to sixth place in the points table, with their chances of making the playoffs now reduced to just 28.4%.
CSK currently have 12 points from 12 matches, but their path to the top four has become increasingly difficult. They must now win both their remaining matches and rely on favourable outcomes in other fixtures to stay in contention.
Gujarat Titans lead playoff probability chart
According to projections, Gujarat Titans are in the strongest position to qualify for the playoffs, with a 98% probability. They are closely followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who have a 96.1% chance of advancing. Both teams currently sit on 16 points and have two matches left in the league stage.
Their consistent performances throughout the season have placed them firmly in control of their playoff destiny, requiring only one or two wins to confirm qualification.
Mid-table battle intensifies
The race for the remaining playoff spots is far more competitive. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) hold the third spot in probability rankings with a 70.3% chance, having accumulated 14 points from 12 matches.
Interestingly, Rajasthan Royals (RR), despite having fewer points than Punjab Kings (PBKS), are in a better position statistically. RR have a 51.6% chance of qualification compared to PBKS’ 48.8%, largely due to their superior Net Run Rate (NRR) and having played one match fewer.
PBKS, led by Shreyas Iyer, have 13 points from 12 matches but have struggled for consistency in recent games, which has impacted their playoff probability.
CSK face uphill battle
For CSK, the scenario is straightforward yet challenging. With only two games remaining, they must secure victories in both matches to stay alive in the tournament. Even then, qualification will depend on other results going in their favour.
Their recent loss to LSG exposed vulnerabilities, particularly in bowling, despite a competitive total of 187/5 built around a half-century by Kartik Sharma. LSG chased down the target comfortably, thanks to an explosive innings by Mitchell Marsh.
Lower-ranked teams nearly out
At the bottom end of the table, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have a slim 3.6% chance of qualification, while Delhi Capitals (DC) are even lower at 3.1%. Both teams are virtually out of contention unless an unlikely sequence of results unfolds.
Ruturaj Gaikwad remains optimistic
Despite the odds, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back. Speaking after the defeat, he emphasised the importance of focusing on the remaining matches and maintaining a simple approach.
Gaikwad stated that the team’s objective is clear—win every remaining game and adapt quickly to conditions. He also highlighted the need to improve key areas and make the most of individual performances on match days.
Conclusion
As IPL 2026 approaches its final phase, the playoff race remains wide open, particularly for mid-table teams. While Gujarat Titans and RCB are on the verge of qualification, franchises like CSK face a must-win situation. With slim margins separating teams, every match from here on could निर्णe the final standings. CSK’s fate now hangs by a thread, making their upcoming fixtures crucial in determining whether they can stage a late comeback.
