mumbai: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) climbed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table after a thrilling win over Mumbai Indians (MI), intensifying the playoff race with eight teams still in contention for the top four spots.
RCB’s dramatic last-over victory not only boosted their Net Run Rate but also knocked MI and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) out of the tournament. With the league stage entering its final stretch, qualification scenarios are becoming increasingly complex for the remaining teams.
RCB in strong position but not safe yet
RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, currently sit at No. 1 with 14 points from 11 matches and an impressive Net Run Rate of +1.103. While they are favourites to qualify, their spot in the playoffs is not yet mathematically secured.
Traditionally, 16 points are considered enough to ensure qualification. One more win should take RCB to that mark, but they will aim to win all remaining games to secure a top-two finish, which offers a direct entry into Qualifier 1 and a second chance at reaching the final.
SRH and GT close behind
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are level with RCB on 14 points but trail in Net Run Rate (+0.737). Their path is relatively straightforward—they need to win at least two of their remaining three matches to confirm qualification.
Gujarat Titans (GT), also on 14 points, have a lower NRR of +0.228 and face a tighter situation. They too require a minimum of two wins to stay comfortably in the race. Their upcoming clash against SRH could prove decisive in shaping the top four.
Punjab Kings in advantageous position
Punjab Kings (PBKS) are in a strong position with 13 points from just 10 matches, giving them a crucial game in hand over most rivals.
Two wins from their remaining four matches would take them to 17 points, a total that has historically guaranteed a playoff berth. Their flexibility makes them one of the best-placed teams at this stage.
CSK and RR in tight battle
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are both on 12 points and face a challenging path ahead.
CSK, with a slightly better NRR of +0.185, need at least two wins from their final three matches to reach 16 points. However, their qualification could still depend on other results if multiple teams finish with similar points.
RR, with a lower NRR of +0.082, are in a slightly weaker position. Having lost three of their last four matches, they must also aim for at least two wins and improve their NRR significantly.
The battle between CSK and RR could ultimately decide the fourth playoff spot.
KKR and DC face uphill task
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) remain in contention but have a difficult road ahead. They must win all four of their remaining matches to reach 17 points. Even a single loss could end their hopes or leave them dependent on other results.
Delhi Capitals (DC), meanwhile, are mathematically alive but virtually on the brink of elimination. With the worst NRR in the league (-1.154), they not only need to win all remaining matches but also rely on multiple favourable outcomes from other fixtures.
MI and LSG eliminated
Following RCB’s win, both Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have been officially knocked out of the playoff race.
MI’s campaign was marked by inconsistency and narrow defeats, while LSG also failed to maintain momentum in the crucial stages of the tournament.
Conclusion
With eight teams still in contention and only a handful of matches remaining, the IPL 2026 playoff race is set for a thrilling finish. Net Run Rate, head-to-head results and pressure handling will all play crucial roles in determining the final four.
RCB may currently lead the table, but the competition remains wide open, ensuring an exciting climax to the league stage.
