Chennai Super Kings registered their first win of the Indian Premier League 2026 season with a 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. After being put in to bat, CSK posted a strong 212/6, powered by a brilliant unbeaten 115 from Sanju Samson and a quickfire 59 from Ayush Mhatre. In reply, Delhi Capitals were restricted to 189 despite a solid effort, as CSK’s total proved too steep to chase down. Jamie Overton was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 18.

The tournament is set to be played in a format similar to the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier Leaguewhere the ten participating teams are split into two groups for the league stage.
In this structure, each team plays twice against the other sides within its own group and faces teams from the opposite group once. This ensures that every franchise competes against all opponents while having a slightly heavier schedule against group rivals.
Once the league phase concludes, the top four teams on the points table qualify for the playoffs. The knockout stage begins with Qualifier 1, where the top two teams compete for a direct entry into the final, with the winner booking a spot in the title match.
The third and fourth-ranked teams then face off in the Eliminator, where the losing side is immediately eliminated from the competition. The winner of this match moves on to Qualifier 2, where they meet the loser of Qualifier 1. The victor of Qualifier 2 secures the second and final place in the championship game.
Team standings are primarily decided by total points earned during the league stage. If teams are tied on points, net run rate and other tie-breaking criteria are used to determine positions on the table. At present, Rajasthan Royals sit at the top of the standings with eight points, holding a strong position in the early phase of the tournament.
