IPL 2026: Punjab made many historical records by beating Ruturaj Sena, Australia also lagged behind
Chennai. The seventh match of IPL (Indian Premier League) 2026 was played on 3 April between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). In this match, Punjab created history in Chepauk. Chasing the target of more than 200 runs, Punjab won by 5 wickets and made many big records in its name.
Batting first, CSK made a strong score of 209/5 in 20 overs, but Punjab batsmen achieved it by making 210/5 in 18.4 overs. The hero of this victory was uncapped player Priyansh Arya, who turned the match by scoring 39 runs in just 11 balls and became the ‘Player of the Match’.
This performance of Priyansh Arya was special because it was only the second time in IPL history that a player has won the ‘Player of the Match’ by playing 11 or less balls, without any contribution in bowling or fielding. Earlier this feat was accomplished by Glenn Phillips in 2023.
Punjab Kings has now become the team with the most successful chase of 200+ runs in T20 cricket (9 times), leaving behind Australia (7 times).
This 210-run chase of Punjab against CSK ranks second among their biggest successful run chases in IPL history. Earlier the chase of 262 runs came against KKR in 2025.
Punjab’s dominance continues in Chepauk also. This is their fourth consecutive win against CSK from 2023 to 2026. In this matter, they are now second after Mumbai Indians (5 wins).
This defeat is a matter of concern for CSK in many ways. The team scored 200+, but still lost. This is the fifth time in IPL that CSK has lost to Punjab after scoring 200+, which is the highest against any team.

Important statistics related to CSK
For the second time since 2022, CSK has lost its first two matches of a season.
CSK scored 200+ against Punjab 6 times in IPL
This is their joint-highest (along with RCB) against any one team.
Out of these 6 occasions, CSK lost 4 times.
Only 1 win came in 2008 (first IPL match)
CSK lost for the fifth time against Punjab even after scoring 200+ runs.
This is the record for the highest number of such defeats against a single opponent in T20 cricket.
West Indies left behind the record of 4 defeats against Australia
Additionally, this is only the second time that CSK has lost its first two matches of a season (the first happened in 2022). Overall, while Punjab Kings seem to be in ‘mission mode’, CSK will have to work seriously on their bowling and death over strategy. Now the challenge before Ruturaj Gaikwad is how she makes her comeback tournament after two consecutive defeats.
After two consecutive defeats in IPL 2026, CSK captain Gaikwad is being criticized for his tactical decisions, especially the change in bowling and less usage of players.
