IPL 2026 Purple Cap: Gujarat Titans (GT) thrashed Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 77 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday, May 9, which has dramatically altered the race for the IPL 2026 Purple Cap. The Gujarat batters had set the platform with a mammoth 229-run total but their bowling unit – arguably the most formidable in the league now – rearranged the leaderboard. Kagiso Rabada has officially hit the top, while Mohammed Siraj has fought his way back into the top 10.
Rabada Dethrones Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Kagiso Rabada came into the match only one wicket behind and produced a clinical spell to grab the Purple Cap. South African speedster was also among the wickets as he sent back dangerous openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shimron Hetmyer for 2 wickets for 33 runs. This took his season tally to 18 wickets. He has now overtaken Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar who is currently placed second with 17 scalps. Rabada’s knack to strike in the powerplay and death overs has been the center point of Gujarat’s rise to the second spot on the points table.
Rashid Khan and Siraj Propel GT’s Surge
Rabada wasn’t the only one on the move Saturday. Rashid Khan was a masterclass in leg spin and was the Player of the Match with 4/33. This spectacular spell took him to 15 wickets for the season, 6th in the overall standings.
Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, showed great resilience to come back from some early aggression from RR’s 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Sooryavanshi was finally dismissed by Siraj who ended a dangerous opening stand and finished with 1/55. That wicket was his 12th of the season which is enough to place him in 9th position in the Purple Cap list, tied with MI’s AM Ghazanfar.
