Before the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has appointed Ishan Kishan as its captain. SRH has taken this decision because its regular captain Pat Cummins has not fully recovered from the injury and he may miss some matches of IPL 2026. Cummins is likely to reach Hyderabad by March 23 but there is no update yet on when he will start playing. In such a situation, Ishan Kishan has been given the command of the team for the initial matches. Abhishek Sharma has been made his deputy.
Ishan will become the 11th captain of SRH. He will be the fourth Indian player to take command of this team which joined IPL in 2013. So far, SRH has been led by Kumar Sangakkara, Cameron White, Shikhar Dhawan, Darren Sammy, David Warner, Kane Williamson, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Manish Pandey, Aiden Markram and Cummins.

More trust on foreign players
SRH management has so far shown more confidence in foreign players in the matter of captaincy. This team has played 196 matches in IPL so far, in which foreign players have been its captain in 177 matches. Whereas Indian players have captained SRH in only 19 matches. Warner-Williamson is the captain who has led this team in the most number of matches. Warner has captained SRH in 67 matches, while Williamson has commanded the team in 46 matches.
Talking about Indian players, only Dhawan was the full-time captain of this team. The rest, like Ishaan, got command of the team only when the regular captain was injured or unavailable. Dhawan captained SRH in 10 matches in the 2014 season, in which he led the team to victory in 4 matches. He was removed from the captaincy mid-season after the team was out of the playoff race.

Bhuvneshwar captained in 3 different seasons
Fast bowler Bhuvneshwar, who played for SRH in IPL for a long time, captained this team in 6 matches in the 2019 season. He got this responsibility due to Williamson’s injury. Bhaneshwar did this in a match in 2022 also. He played the role again in SRH’s first match in IPL 2023 with Aiden Markram unavailable. That is, he captained SRH in a total of 8 IPL matches, in which he led the team to victory in two matches.
Manish Pandey has captained SRH in only one match. He took command of the team in IPL 2021 when Williamson was injured. SRH had lost in that match.
