IPL Opening Match History: The 19th season (IPL 2026) of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is starting from March 28. BCCI has released the schedule for the first 16 days of IPL 2026. The first match of IPL 2026 will be played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. - 2008: The first-ever match of IPL was played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). KKR performed brilliantly to defeat RCB by 140 runs, thus starting the IPL with a bang.
- 2009: The first match of the next season was played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Mumbai thrilled the audience by winning by 19 runs.
- 2010: KKR defeated Deccan Chargers by 11 runs after a tough fight, and again maintained the tradition of winning the first match.
- 2011: The first match of this year was between CSK and KKR, in which CSK won by a very thrilling 2 runs.
- 2012: In the first match between CSK and MI, MI won by 8 wickets.
- 2013: In the match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and KKR, KKR won by 6 wickets.
- 2014: This time KKR defeated MI by 41 runs, which was one of the biggest wins so far in the opening match.
- 2015: KKR achieved its first win of the season by defeating MI by 7 wickets.
- 2016: There was a match between MI and Rising Pune Supergiants, in which Pune won by 9 wickets.
- 2017: In the first match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and RCB, SRH made a good start by winning by 35 runs.
- 2018: In the first match between MI and CSK, CSK won by 1 wicket, which was a very close match.
- 2019: In the match between RCB and CSK, CSK won by 7 wickets.
- 2020: MI and CSK faced each other, in which CSK won by 5 wickets.
- 2021: RCB beat MI by 2 wickets, and the thrill was again visible in the first match.
- 2022: In the match between CSK and KKR, KKR won by 6 wickets.
- 2023: In the match between CSK and Gujarat Titans (GT), GT won by 5 wickets.
- 2024: In the first match between RCB and CSK, CSK won by 6 wickets.
- 2025: In the match between KKR and RCB, RCB won by 7 wickets.
