IPL 2026 Start Date: Star Sports confirmed on Sunday that the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will start from March 28. However, the official schedule of all the matches of this season has not been released yet. Last year’s champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the 2025 title by defeating Punjab Kings by 6 runs in Ahmedabad.

Earlier this month, Karnataka State Cricket Association Secretary Santosh Menon said that RCB will have 5 home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Apart from this, Qualifier 1 and final will also be played in this stadium. The remaining two home matches of RCB will be held at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium.

Format of IPL 2026

This will be the 19th edition of IPL and it is considered to be the biggest tournament till date. According to reports, this time there will be 84 matches, which is more than 74 matches of the last season. This time 10 franchises will play in double round-robin format and after this there will be playoffs.

The league stage will run from March 28 to May 24 and matches will be played in 10 cities. The playoffs will start from May 26. Qualifier 1 and final will be held in Bengaluru. Other playoff matches like Eliminator and Qualifier 2 will probably be played in Ahmedabad or Raipur, but the final decision has not been decided yet.

Tournament start and schedule

As per tradition, the previous year’s champions play the first match of the tournament. RCB is likely to face Punjab Kings in the first match, although this match has not been officially decided yet.

Due to the elections, the Board of Control for Cricket in India may release the IPL 2026 schedule in two phases. The schedule for the first 15 days will come first and the remaining matches will be announced after the elections are over.
