Who is Cooper Connolly? Who single-handedly led Punjab Kings to victory

Delhi: A new star has emerged in the very first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. 22-year-old Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to victory with his bat in his debut match.

Explosive innings in debut match

Connolly scored unbeaten 72 runs in 44 balls in the match played at Maharaja Yadvinder Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. During this, he hit 5 fours and 5 sixes and led the team to victory in a thrilling manner. Thanks to his performance, Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by 3 wickets. Cooper Connolly was also chosen “Man of the Match” for this brilliant innings.

Glenn Maxwell’s options and all-round ability

Punjab Kings had bought Cooper Connolly for Rs 3 crore in the IPL 2026 auction. He is being considered as a long-term alternative to Glenn Maxwell in both Australia and Punjab Kings teams. Connolly is also an aggressive batsman like Maxwell and can also contribute in spin bowling. He has considered former Australian star Shaun Marsh as his cricket idol.

international experience

Before his debut, Cooper Connolly had played 52 matches in T20 cricket and scored 870 runs and 30 wickets. He plays domestic cricket for Western Australia and has also played for Australia at international level. He has 1 Test, 8 ODI and 11 T20 International matches to his name. He made his T20I debut on 7 September 2024 against Scotland, while his only Test match was played in 2025 against Sri Lanka under the captaincy of Steve Smith.
