IPL 2026: Why is Shimron Hetmyer not playing in today’s SRH vs RR match? Riyan Parag told. Read

Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) It surprised many fans by dropping one of its key finishers, Shimron Hetmyer, in their IPL 2026 clash against India. The West Indian batsman, known for his ability to turn the game in the final overs, was missing from the playing XI, creating an atmosphere of curiosity and debate among the spectators.

SRH vs RR: Why Shimron Hetmyer is not playing in today’s match

RR have made a strong start to the season, winning all four matches, so the decision appears to be strategic rather than forced. During the toss, the captain Riyan Parag talked about this change and clarified that Hetmyer’s absence was part of a planned rotation strategy.

“We have two changes. Brijesh is out and Tushar Deshpande is in. Hetty has been rested and Pretorius is making his debut,” He said.

This confirms that the decision has been taken not because of any injury but to manage workload and ascertain bench strength. In a long tournament like the IPL, teams often rotate players to keep them fresh for the crucial latter stages, and Rajasthan seems to be following this approach.

Although Hetmyer is not in the starting XI, he has not been completely ruled out of the match. He has been named in the list of influential substitutes, which means he can play later depending on the match situation. However, a debutant has been included in the squad, so it is more likely that the team intends to completely rest Hetmyer.

So far in IPL 2026, Hetmyer has had a relatively quiet performance compared to his usual standards. In four matches, he has scored 58 runs at an average of 19.33, with a strike rate of 141.46. While these stats aren’t bad, they fall short of the explosive impact he is known for. This may also influence the team’s decision to rotate him for this match.

Debut for Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, RR trying to maintain winning momentum

Hetmyer’s absence has opened the door for young South African batsman Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, who is making his IPL debut in this match. The 21-year-old batsman is known for his aggressive batting style and will be keen to make the most of this opportunity on the big stage.

Pretorius joins fellow South Africans Donovan Ferreira and Nandre Berger in the Rajasthan Royals setup, adding an interesting dynamic to the team’s middle-order. With the Royals already performing well, this debut gives the management a chance to test the depth of their squad while maintaining a competitive edge.

Apart from this change, Rajasthan made another adjustment in their playing XI. Tushar Deshpande returned to the team in place of Brijesh Sharma. Deshpande’s ability with the new ball strengthens the fast bowling attack, which already includes experienced names like Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma and Nandre Berger.

On the other hand, SRH are trying to make a comeback after their previous defeat in the match. They have retained the same playing XI while relying on their strong top order, which includes Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen.
