Iran fires ‘dancing missile’ for the first time… Israel-US tensions rise

Tehran. On Sunday, the 16th day of the US-Israel-Iran War in the Middle East, Iran launched massive missile attacks on Israeli and US bases. According to the Iranian news agency Press TV, the indigenously developed Sejjil ballistic missile was used for the first time in these attacks. This attack is the first wartime launch of the Sejjil missile since the war began in late February. The Iranian military targeted Israeli command and control centers and important military installations under the ‘True Promise 4’ operation. The Sejjil missile is a solid-fueled two-stage medium-range ballistic missile with an estimated range of about 2000 kilometers and can carry up to 700 kilograms of explosives.

In fact, this missile is also known as the dancing missile because it can maneuver at high altitudes, making it easier to evade missile defense systems like the Iron Dome. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), this missile is approximately 18 meters long, 1.25 meters in diameter, and weighs 23,600 kilograms. Its solid fuel allows it to be rapidly prepared and launched, giving it a strategic advantage over the older liquid-fueled Shahab series.

Development of the Sejjil began in the 1990s. The first test took place in 2008, during which it flew approximately 800 km. Subsequent tests have been conducted, with a recorded range of up to 1900 km. This attack comes at a time when the war began with joint US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, 2026. These attacks killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and sparked widespread conflict in the region.

Iran has retaliated with repeated missile and drone attacks on US bases in Israel and Gulf countries, while Israel and the US have continued to attack Iranian targets. According to reports, more than 2,000 people, mostly Iranians, have been killed in the war so far. The Pentagon said that US and Israeli forces have attacked more than 15,000 targets in Iran since the conflict began. According to US media, the Pentagon has deployed amphibious assault ships like the USS Tripoli with 2,500 Marines to the region.
