The situation in Iran, which is suffering from economic crisis, inflation and historic collapse of the currency, is continuously worsening, while Trump’s warning has created a stir in international politics.
These protests, which broke out in Iran since New Year, have now taken a nationwide form. People have taken to the streets from the capital Tehran to many provinces. Meanwhile, Trump has claimed that if the Iranian government opened fire on peaceful protesters and killed them, America would intervene.
Trump’s open warning to Iran
Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’ warning Iran that if Iran shoots at peaceful protesters and brutally kills them, as has been their tradition, then America will come forward to protect them. He further said, “We are fully prepared and locked and loaded for action. Thank you for bringing attention to this issue!” This statement of Trump is being seen as a direct threat against Iran.
Death toll increased amid protests
At least seven people have died in Iran so far. This demonstration is considered to be the biggest protest after 2022. The movement entered its fifth day on Thursday and spread from the capital Tehran to rural areas. The root of these protests is Iran’s deteriorating economy. The movement that started in the big markets of Tehran on Sunday erupted when the Iranian currency Rial reached a record low. Due to this, there was a huge rise in inflation and prices of everyday items.
The movement spread to students and cities
By Tuesday this dissatisfaction reached students and common citizens. Demonstrations took place in cities like Shiraz, Isfahan, Kermanshah and Fasa. In videos viral on social media, protesters were seen raising slogans like ‘Death to the Dictator’ and ‘Death to Khamenei’, while clashes also took place with security forces at many places.

According to a New York Post report, MEK-related video footage shows crowds across the country chanting ‘Death to Khamenei!’ and “Shame on you, shame on you!” Like were seen raising slogans. Especially in the markets of Tehran, demonstrations led by traders are intensifying.
What did President Pezeshkian say?
Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian acknowledged the public’s anger and said that the government is ready to listen to the ‘legitimate demands’ of the protesters. However, he also warned that any attempt to create instability in the country will not be tolerated. The government has taken some steps to handle the situation, including appointing a new central bank chief and tightening security around universities. The current protests are considered to be the biggest since the movements following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in 2022. The dissatisfaction arising from inflation, unemployment, water shortage and governance is now openly visible on the streets.
