Ministry of External Affairs issued advisory for Indian citizens, said – ‘Leave Iran immediately, keep these important documents with you’

New Delhi. In view of the ongoing violence and protests in Iran for the last two weeks, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory for Indian citizens. In view of the changing security situation in Iran, the Central Government has advised Indians living there to leave the country as soon as possible. These protests in Iran began late last month when the Iranian currency Rial reached a record low. After this, this movement gradually spread to all the 31 provinces of the country. These protests, which initially started over economic issues, have now transformed into demands for political change.

Appeal to leave Iran

The Ministry of External Affairs said in the advisory that Indian citizens should use all available means of transport, including commercial flights, so that they can safely exit Iran.

Advice to stay away from sensitive areas

The government has reiterated that all Indian citizens and PIOs living in Iran should exercise utmost caution. They have been advised to stay away from any kind of protests or disturbed areas, keep an eye on the local situation and remain in regular touch with the Indian Embassy in Iran.

Always keep travel documents ready

All Indian nationals present in Iran have been asked to keep their travel and immigration related documents, such as passports and identity cards, safe and ready with them at all times.

Contact Indian Embassy for assistance

The Ministry of External Affairs has clarified that for any kind of assistance or information, Indian citizens can contact the Indian Embassy in Tehran. The government has assured that all possible help will be provided to Indian citizens if needed. It is noteworthy that earlier in the advisory issued on January 5, the Indian government had also urged its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iran. Also, Indian citizens and persons of Indian origin living in Iran were advised to exercise utmost caution and stay away from protest areas.

The death toll increased to 2,572

Iran’s Chief Justice has hinted at speedy trials and death sentences for people detained during nationwide anti-government protests. At the same time, human rights activists said on Wednesday that the death toll has increased to 2,572. US-based ‘Human Rights Activists News Agency’ said that by Wednesday morning the death toll had increased to 2,571. The death toll is higher than any protest or unrest in Iran in decades and is reminiscent of the chaos that followed the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. After learning of the death toll, Trump warned Iran’s leaders that he was ending any negotiations and would take action.
