Iran without internet! The world was surprised to see restrictions like North Korea, read the full report

Amidst the ongoing tension in the Middle East, a news is coming from Iran which has shocked the entire world. The ongoing internet blackout in Iran has become the longest nationwide shutdown ever. For the last 37 days, the people of Iran have been completely cut off from the digital world. According to the report, internet services have been halted in the country for the last 864 hours, due to which the lives of the common citizens there have become completely disrupted.

Netblocks’ shocking revelation

Internet monitoring organization ‘NetBlocks’ has said in its report that this is the longest nationwide internet shutdown in any country so far. Internet connectivity in Iran has dropped to only 1 percent of its normal level. This simply means that more than 90 million (9 crore) people of Iran are completely cut off from the global internet and have no contact with the outside world.

Encirclement of ‘National Network’ in the name of security

According to reports, Iran was previously connected to the global internet, but after escalating conflicts with Israel and the US, the government isolated itself from the international network. The government has now decided to limit itself to the ‘National Network’ only. Citing security concerns, the Iranian government has imposed strict controls on Internet access. Not only this, the government has also banned alternative routes like satellite connections and VPNs so that no one can connect to the outside world secretly.

Iran on the path to North Korea?

NetBlocks has compared this shutdown to other crisis-hit countries in the world. The report says that North Korea was never connected to the global internet, but Iran has become the first country in the world which, after being fully connected, has deliberately cut itself off from the global network and converted it into a ‘national network’. Earlier, during the January protests in Iran, the internet remained closed for weeks, but the current situation has destroyed all previous records.

The situation is more terrifying than Gaza and Ukraine.

Other conflict areas of the world such as Myanmar, Sudan, Tigray, Ukraine and Gaza have also had internet disruptions for long periods of time, but the situation there was different. In countries like Ukraine and Gaza, the internet was lost due to the destruction of infrastructure due to war, but the government of any country did not deliberately take the entire country offline during the crisis. The situation in Iran is that the entire population has been digitally imprisoned, without any physical infrastructure damage. Common citizens are completely cut off from the world and information about what is happening inside is not able to come out.
