According to reports, Kausar Bashar al-Husayjawi was a resident of Al-Nahrawan, a neighborhood south-eastern of Baghdad. It is said that she dropped out of school at an early age and in her adolescence she was married to a man much older than her. She reportedly faced domestic violence and mental torture during her married life. After a long struggle, she separated from her husband and later got divorced through legal process.

Some time after the divorce, the family started preparations to get her married to her cousin. There were discussions at the local level about the young man’s involvement in criminal activities and drug trade. It is said that Kausar had flatly refused to accept this relationship. However, some people in the family and clan constantly put pressure on her for marriage. The dispute between the family and the girl regarding this issue increased.
