The crucial IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Corporation) website that is used by lakhs of Indians to book and reserve train tickets as well as for myriad other purposes for the mammoth Indian Railways went down on Saturday, January 11, 2025. This is the fourth time the service has malfunctioned in the past few weeks, throwing innumerable railway passengers into great inconvenience. Users have also posted complaints on social media platform X.

Downdetector, the site that monitors major outages, showed a sharp spike in the number of outages around 12 noon on January 11, 2025. Most of the problems reported were from users who were trying to buy tickets through the IRCTC app and website.

IRCTC outages in the recent past

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) app and website are encountering frequent outages. And strangely most of the problems are taking place in the peak ticket booking hours in the morning. The last incident of outage in IRCTC portal was on December 31, 2024. It was the third outage in December. The immediately preceding glitch was reported on the morning of December 26, 2024.

According to reports, IRCTC website is one of the most widely-used websites in India. About 6.6 crore people — far more than the total population of Italy — are registered users on the IRCTC website and the number of tickets booked every day on average is about 7.31 lakh. Incidentally, the IRCTC share price went up by 2.06% on Friday, January 11. It rose by Rs 15.70 during the course of business and closed at the level of Rs 779.50.

Incidentally, on December 26, the IRCTC mobile app and website began functioning after about 2 hours of outage. However, on January 11, it was not clear when the website would spring back to life again. On December 26, IRCTC had said in statement: “Due to maintenance activity, e-ticketing service will not be available. Please try later.”
